Too Many Tongues In My Mouth
BOOK DETAILS: 64 pages, target audience: African American women between the ages of 17 to mid/late 40s, publication date November 2019
"Here’s a book that poetically describes the joys and pains, as well as the momentous and mysterious journey, of transitioning from adolescence in to adulthood. Too Many Tongues in My Mouth captures the vibrant and raw imagination of being a teenager, the brutal and uncertain realities as a young adult, and how the magic of words is rebirth. Minimah Rush’s poetic memoir is a new modern American classic. Minimah expresses how she navigated through her life’s ups and downs proudly accepting her struggles and experiences to become the woman she is today. A poetic memoir that tells a tale of a lioness that wanted to be heard, not seen. Too Many Tongues In My Mouth will open up minds for generations to come.
There are 32 poems with an afterthought for each piece. The afterthoughts discuss why the piece was written or addresses the topic of the poem. The work ranges from 2011 to 2019. The author decided to include the dates of each piece so that readers could possibly see her personal growth
over the years. She didn’t put the poems in chronological order because she wanted readers to experience her life as she did and that is: things not always being in order on solid grounds – sometimes chaotic and unpredictable. In Minimah's book she talks about various topics because those are the different turns she made while on her life’s journey.
Topics range from self-love, being Black in America, politics, being one's authentic self, cheating, heartbreak, sexual confidence, lust, relationships, change, motherhood, postpartum depression, dream chasing, friendship, traveling, death, grief, to self-awareness."
Author, Minimah Rush was interviewed October 3, 2019 on her journey as a writer and the background of her book.
What inspired you to write "Too Many Tongues In My Mouth?"
MINIMAH: I have been writing poetry for 15+ years, however I never felt the need to share my work being that it was a way of self-care. Thus, when I gave birth to my son and was experiencing postpartum depression, writing helped me. I thought if anything was to ever happen to me I would want my son to know who his mom was directly from me not word of mouth so I wrote my book with a collection of poetry by myself from 2011 to 2019.
What would you like readers to gain from reading your book?
MINIMAH: I would like women to connect and understand that they are not alone when it comes to the different joys and pains of transitioning from adolescence to adulthood; and finding confidence in their sexuality, seeking love, beginning a family, being a career woman, or being happy with one’s self. My book would also give men insight on women.
What do you like to do when you are not writing?
MINIMAH: I love to travel to different countries and live a few days as the natives to get a full experience; as well as visit museums or galleries. I get inspiration from each.
If you were given the opportunity to form a book club with your favorite authors of all time, which 3 writers would you want to become a part of the club?
MINIMAH: The three writers I would want to become a part of my book club are Toni Morrison, Ntozake Shange, and a tossup between Sista Souljah (Lisa Williamson) and Jamaica Kincaid.
What is your favorite quote for life?
MINIMAH: “You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself any direction you choose. You’re on your own. And you know what you know. And YOU are the one who’ll decide where to go.” – Dr. Seuss Oh, The Places You’ll Go.
Here's a random, "would you rather" question for fun. Would you rather visit the future or the past?
MINIMAH: I would like to visit the past for inspiration with my writing as well as to get a feel of when things were on the come up before social media and technology.
Lastly, where can readers purchase a copy of "Too Many Tongues In My Mouth?"
